Educational ProjectGolden Bay Schools Educational programme has been running across Oct and November 2005, with the Bag Ladies contacting each headmaster/ress and organising a day to come in, educate the students and for them to have great fun painting their very own cloth bag
Outdoor fun at Central Takaka schoolTheir programme includes information about plastic shopping bags - what they are made out of, where the garbage goes, how long it takes for them to break down in landfills and how dangerous they can be to stock and sea creatures if they are in the rivers and the sea. They also educate the children why there is no need to use plastic bags to line rubbish bins, once all the glass, plastic, paper and cardboard are put in the recycling bin and once all the food scraps are put in the compost or worm farm or are eaten by domestic animals, pigs or even the birds. The only rubbish that is left over can be simply placed in the bin or wrapped in newspaper, with no need for a plastic liner.
Takaka Primary School showing off all their bagsRefusing plastic shopping bags is so much easier than collecting them, storing them and then having to dream up uses for them ! The educational project has been funded by the Tasman District Council's Zero Waste Fund. |
