Golden Bay moves to be Plastic Bag Free

The plan to make Golden Bay a plastic bag free zone will take a step forward on New Years Day. A local group is hoping to cut out plastic bags all together, by two thousand and six. Organiser Nicola Basham says the first event will be held on January first at the top of the Takaka Hill, where people will be given a free cotton bag for shopping in the region. She says its estimated five and a half bags per person are used every week, and the effects on the environment are irreversible. Nicola Basham says it seems crazy to use plastic bags, as they take over five hundred years to rot down in landfills.

Moves to make Golden Bay Plastic Bag free

Moves are afoot to make Golden Bay New Zealand's first plastic bag free zone. It's already been done in one area of Tasmania, and Nelson Green list MP Mike Ward says it could easily happen here. He's facilitating a workshop in Takaka early this evening to discuss the issue. Mike Ward says around eight million supermarket bags a year are thrown away in this country. He acknowledges that plastic bags comprise only a small portion of the country's total waste, but says they're an extraordinarily messy and potentially lethal part of the waste stream.

Green MP offers basket as incentive

All conscientious Nelson shoppers are in the running to win a willow grocery basket from Nelson's Green MP. Mike Ward is campaigning against plastic supermarket bags, and is encouraging Nelsonians to get behind this. He says a Golden Bay basket Weaver gave the basket to him when he announced his intention to introduce a private members bill to leave plastic bags. Mike Ward says the recipient of the basket will use their own reusable bags, and will also buy local products, and things with the least amount of packaging.
